Please don't disconnect me

My eyes are diverted to the right of sight and scroll over faceless beings; the presence of a name with a body elsewhere. Beside them all, lined up neatly in columns and categorized by gender, is a yellow post-it, declaring clearly their absense while wanting to be available. So I speak to it. And it replies promplty that so-and-so is out--at school, rehearsal, work, a movie. But I am not at loss without them, for each and every one has left a number, or assured me they are within reach by dialing, and so, by need, they are available. I wonder if it is really I whom they are aiding by providing such information. Or are they just afraid to disconnect? If they don't leave a note as to where they've gone, how will anyone find them?
