Unaffected-Chapter 7

Feeling: aloof

With the roller coasters racing over the tracks, the riders' screams echoed throughout the atmosphere and brought the Midway to life. The lights lit the sky into day and people walked around listening to bands performing everywhere. The music ran along the boardwalk and his eyes narrowed as he heard the mixed songs. He rested his arms on the railing and watched the waves move in rhythm that eased his headache. His phone rang then and he picked it up with his eyes checking the number.

There wasn't an ID and his eyes became slits as he answered the call. He put the phone to his ear and looked back at the waves.

"Hello, Adam."

He gripped the railing tightly and heard, "You knew this little break wouldn't shake us. We need you to come back. There's so much we can do."

His headache became unbearable and he hung the phone before he could throw it. He held his head with one hand as the pounding brought the idea of his head exploding into the future. Then it disappeared and he looked at the hand that rested on his. His eyes looked down to his side and he found that woman looking straight at him. He jerked his hand free instantly and backed away.

She ran a hand through her short blonde hair and said, "You felt it ease."

He looked at her with caution and she asked, "Do you honestly not recognize me, Adam?"

The way she said his name rattled his memory and he felt his hand tighten into a fist. His eyes traveled down her form and he felt his entire being tighten. Then he met her shadowy gaze and something clicked in his mind. It wasn't the recognition of her, but the knowledge of nearby danger. He looked over his shoulder at the Midway and his eyes scanned the crowd.

She stepped next to him and asked, "What is it?"

He looked back at her a little startled. The words didn't come from her mouth. His eyes narrowed as the danger came closer and mixed with the connection she had with him. When the danger was just out of sight, he lifted his head slightly in stubborness and then he snatched her wrist. He heard a slight mutter of surprise come from her and kept running while dragging her behind him.

When he reached his rental, he opened the passenger and had her get in. Then he shut the door and moved to his. As he started the engine, he knew she was studying him, but his mind searched for an escape route. The instant they were on the highway, he remembered a newby location and he headed that way. As the lights disappeared, he kept checking the surrounding area for the danger and at the same time kept her connection from becoming too strong.

After a few hours, he pulled off the high way and drove through a dense forest. When they pulled up to a small cabin, he shut the engine off and got out. As he approached the cabin, he heard her follow him. With a quiet knock on the door, he glanced at the woman approaching him. Then the door opened and he stepped inside with her right behind him.

An elder woman looked from him to her and said, "I'll prepare a second room."

He looked at her and she disappeared down the hall. Then he looked around the cabin and found the fridge. He heard the grunt of disgust behind him and he ignored it as he pulled out his saviour. When he opened the bottle, he savoured the cool liquid flowing down his throat and then he looked at her.

She leaned against the doorway watching him and said, "I never thought you'd drink."

His eyes narrowed and his voice became distant as he asked, "Who are you?"
