Greetings and Farewells
|
April 22nd, 2007 @ 12:00am |
| by sirmink |
First and foremost, the greetings.
So, we (my wife Shannon and I) took off down I-95 to visit Kate and Dania down in New Haven. It was a fantastic time; of course, getting there was our first adventure, ending up in Danbury (a whole quarter of the state away from New Haven) due to a little mishap with my mental directions. Oh, well.
Afterwards, Kate, Dania, Shannon and I went out for pizza (Pepe's world famous, the best brick oven pie I've had, so far as I can tell; Burlington's American Flatbread is a close second), a visit to an IKEA (let me tell you, best store EVER!), and a nice New Haven pub for some Guinness. This was really the highlight of the weekend for us; Kate and Dania are fantastic people, and we just had a blast. Kate and I had already met in Georgetown, ME two summers ago, but I had never met Dania, and Shannon had never met the both of them. Well, now, Shannon believes she was separated from Dania at birth, and her quote about Kate? "She's fantastic. I heart the Kate." That's Shannon-code for awesome. :)
We hit up Mystic after that. Great place; loved the Seaport and the Aquarium. Those are just things we've always liked doing, and though we're not normally tourists like that, we enjoyed being in the throes of it for a while. Of course, the Friendly's off the Interstate is a place you should avoid. Incompetent management.
So, that was my weekend. Wonderful way to round out my April break and head back to school. I only hope we get to meet up with Kate and Dania soon...in Burlington, VT (we also talked about that at the bar) or anywhere. We'll see what happens.
And now, the farewell.
My first entry at sitDiary was almost four years ago. Back then, I was an angry, immature, jaded college student. Now, it's 2007. My last entry will see me off as a teacher, relating to those same kids, the same kids that I was once; my last entry bids a farewell from the person I hardly thought I had a chance to become when I started. It's insane how much you change in four years, how much you grow up. And in working with kids, I've realized that a change in personality, maturity, or simply focus in lifestyle may necessitate other changes.
So, goodbye, sit. And now, you may ask, where am I going?
Well, two places, actually.
First and foremost: my personal chronicles will be relocated to livejournal. I'm going to leave these up for a while, though. I'd at least like to leave them up, so that I can read through them again.
Second: I've come to realize that, as an educator, it's important to reflect on the goings-on of the world of education in a more professional manner. My friend Erik has a blog that does this somewhat, and that site will be separate completely from my personal blog (it's an email address thing). So, here it is.
Fare thee well, my friend. It is time to move on. |

91. 99% ready...
|

Hey
So... it's on. Almost all on. Almost completely sorted out. Almost 100% done and dusted. Almost.
Not quite, though - 1 or two little bits to still iron out. But almost.
At the moment, the big trip north-west is 99% sorted. It goes a little something like this:
1. 1 April: Cape Town - (Joburg 3 hour stopover) - (Noo Yawk City 2 hour stopover) - Washington DC Dulles.
1a. 3 days there, give or take a half-day; hopefully manage to interview for a post-doc at NIH or WRAIR.
2. 4 April Dulles - Noo Yawk City.
2a. 4 days with my old friend Ryan and his current bird; hopefully a post-doc interview at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
3. 8 April Noo Yawk City La Guardia - Denver, Co.
3a. Overnight in Denver, catch the shuttle to Copper Mountain Ski resort Saturday 9 April bright and early.
3b. 9-12 April Keystone Symposium X6: Parasites and cool stuff like that. Present PhD research data, wow everyone, get short-listed for Nobel prize, snowboard a lot. This time, attempt to not fuck up ankle in the first 45 minutes on the snow (a long story from August 2000 involving me, a hot, saucy minx of a snowboarding instructress called Nicole, and a rope ski-lift. And piles of my legendary non-coordination, of course).
3c. 13 April 05h30 shuttle back to Denver.
4. 13 April 09h00 Denver - San Diego.
4a. Hook up with me ol' mucker Ands, the poetic accountant, who is in SD on business (he deals in wigs. Rather, he is the top finance guy in a company dealing in wigs and other hair-related stuff), go out on the town, catch a concert or something, try to not miss interview at Scripps Institute for post-doc on the 14th.
4a i). Wow the Scripps Institute people.
4b. Bus/train/drive to Los Angeles evening the 14th of April.
4c. Paint LA red for three days - Disneyland, Rodeo Drive, Walk of Fame, Dogtown etc. Hopefully have post-doc interview at UCLA on the 15th.
5. Midnight flight out of LAX for Noo Yawk, arriving 7am the morning of the 17th.
5a. Spend two-odd days on various touristy things with Ands and Ryan - Staten Island, Empire State, shopping etc - my big sister turns 30 on the 20th, after all, and is expecting a bag o' swag from me.
6. 18 April 5.55pm South African Airways flight 204 Kennedy to Joburg and 367 Joburg to Cape Town, arriving 9pm on the 19th, theoretically worn out.
Exciting times. The only downside: 17 hours each way plus an hour fuel stop in Senegal or Cape Verde crammed into the new Pride-of-the-SAA-fleet Airbus A340. According to reports, normal-sized people have their knees rammed into the seat in front of them; anyone over 6 foot tall can barely fit in there with legs akimbo. And here is me at 6'3".
Sardine can, anyone?

Am I back? No, not today but maybe next week. We'll see. I'll be in a different state in both metaphorical and literal senses. The big sitd comeback is in the works. Straight up. |

Former Glory

I just got back a rather wonderful trip to Louisiana about a week ago. Things are so different there. I loved it. I'd move there if I could. And I'm writing poetry exclusively now. Not really by choice but at least I'm writing. And some people like it. I have a style. My life is in shambles but who's isn't? I'm trying, you know? Anyway, no matter what I try I'm still depressed about my mom but that's never going to change. My dad is sicker than he should be. I won't write a lot on that. Just that I see him wilting and I remember all too clearly the former glory that was my father. |
