I'm packed and I'm holding, doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo.
Listening to: Len - Steal My Sunshine
Life is good. Now that I can play Semi-Charmed Life on the guitar, I'm basically getting all the pussy I could ever want.

Perfect time for a new paragraph. So while I was youtubing that song, (hey, I gotta perfect standing around angstily in a leather jacket somehow) I clicked on a related video: the music video to Len's smash hit "Steal My Sunshine." Now, I am particularly fond of the shitty things that I liked as a kid*, and I'm guessing that this song is pretty shitty. But here's the kicker: Since I liked it as a kid, I have no idea if it's actually shitty or not. It's like Steal My Sunshine is my cousin, and someone just asked me if she's hot. There is no answer!**

Also, that song came out ten fucking years ago. I'm pretty sure that this is the first thing that I can remember that isn't a cartoon that's officially ten years old. By the way, why do I have so few memories before the age of about five? Was I an alcoholic?***

*"Linkin Park anyone?" jokes Andre 1. "I'll fucking kick your ass Andre 1," says Andre 2. "Linkin Park's first 3 albums were fucking sweet and we both listened to them in middle school!" "Bring it!" says Andre 1. And then they bring it, and Andre 1 wins, because there's only one Andre. Seriously, who the fuck did you think was Andre 2?
The answer better not be the person I have dubbed "Andre 2," which is the other Andre in my class at Pomona. We are in a fierce rivalry that I am neither backing down from nor sure if he's aware of. Now stop reading this wordy and self-referential footnote and get back to my bitching about 90s songs nobody cares about.

**Kickin' piano line = one hot cousin I mean not shitty.

***Yes.

penelope: one month
Word of the Day: conciliatory

Penelope at one month

Pretty eyes! Pen's eyes are still bluish gray, and we all hope they stay that way. Or change to blue. The three of us have brown eyes, but JD's the only one in his family with brown eyes. My dad has blue eyes, so it's definitely in our families. She'd look so cute with blue eyes--I'm trying to picture Patrick with long hair and blue eyes, but it's just not registering. But anyway, her eyes are so pretty.

And, of course, she's super cute when she's sleeping, too.

One of Penelope's favorite places to be is on the changing pad because it's on top of a dresser with a gigantic mirror. Since she came home, she'd just lay there and look at herself or look at things in the mirror. I know that babies love mirrors, but she really loves mirrors.

She's very good with holding her head steady, so it follows that she's good with lifting her head when on her belly. However, when she was playing on her belly this evening, she just about flipped herself over a few times because she kicked her feet up so forcefully.

And then she got mad.

Finally, on that beautiful green blanket.

She went to the doctor two weeks ago for her two week visit, and she weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and was 20 inches long. As the days go by, she's staying up longer during the day and sleeping pretty well at night. Also, I'm discovering that she's pretty grumpy. She looks either grumpy and upset or very thoughtful most of the time. I know she's only a month old and the way she is now might not be the way she grows up, but I don't want her to be grumpy, I want her to be happy and giggly. Maybe that'll come once she learns how to smile and giggle.

This wasn't from today, but I thought this was the cutest thing:

Patrick alternately loves and ignores his sister. When she's crying, he covers his ears. I try to tell him to help console her, to sing to her and try to get her to calm down, but he'd just keep his ears covered. One day, though, he started singing the alphabet to her, and she quieted down. I praised the heck out of him for that, and he was just all sorts of proud of himself.

And speaking of the eldest, look what I found:

Patrick at one month. I guess I'd made him mad, too.

Greetings and Farewells
Feeling: nothing
First and foremost, the greetings.

So, we (my wife Shannon and I) took off down I-95 to visit Kate and Dania down in New Haven. It was a fantastic time; of course, getting there was our first adventure, ending up in Danbury (a whole quarter of the state away from New Haven) due to a little mishap with my mental directions. Oh, well.

Afterwards, Kate, Dania, Shannon and I went out for pizza (Pepe's world famous, the best brick oven pie I've had, so far as I can tell; Burlington's American Flatbread is a close second), a visit to an IKEA (let me tell you, best store EVER!), and a nice New Haven pub for some Guinness. This was really the highlight of the weekend for us; Kate and Dania are fantastic people, and we just had a blast. Kate and I had already met in Georgetown, ME two summers ago, but I had never met Dania, and Shannon had never met the both of them. Well, now, Shannon believes she was separated from Dania at birth, and her quote about Kate? "She's fantastic. I heart the Kate." That's Shannon-code for awesome. :)

We hit up Mystic after that. Great place; loved the Seaport and the Aquarium. Those are just things we've always liked doing, and though we're not normally tourists like that, we enjoyed being in the throes of it for a while. Of course, the Friendly's off the Interstate is a place you should avoid. Incompetent management.

So, that was my weekend. Wonderful way to round out my April break and head back to school. I only hope we get to meet up with Kate and Dania soon...in Burlington, VT (we also talked about that at the bar) or anywhere. We'll see what happens.

And now, the farewell.

My first entry at sitDiary was almost four years ago. Back then, I was an angry, immature, jaded college student. Now, it's 2007. My last entry will see me off as a teacher, relating to those same kids, the same kids that I was once; my last entry bids a farewell from the person I hardly thought I had a chance to become when I started. It's insane how much you change in four years, how much you grow up. And in working with kids, I've realized that a change in personality, maturity, or simply focus in lifestyle may necessitate other changes.

So, goodbye, sit. And now, you may ask, where am I going?

Well, two places, actually.

First and foremost: my personal chronicles will be relocated to livejournal. I'm going to leave these up for a while, though. I'd at least like to leave them up, so that I can read through them again.

Second: I've come to realize that, as an educator, it's important to reflect on the goings-on of the world of education in a more professional manner. My friend Erik has a blog that does this somewhat, and that site will be separate completely from my personal blog (it's an email address thing). So, here it is.

Fare thee well, my friend. It is time to move on.

Lacking a Title
Feeling: angsty
I'm torn.

To voice my feelings. My fears. Or. Remain silent.

He doesn't need it, in all honesty, to defend himself to the one person he shouldn't have to. To dig all that back up again in the face of my insecurities and lacking confidence.

It changes nothing, in the end.

How do you hold up against something like that? Something he's going to second-guess until the end of days. Something he can't quite let go of... despite himself, I suppose.

How do you hold yourself up against something that hovers on the edge of 'what if'?

How do you hold yourself up, and believe you'll come out the one he wants?

Elation.
Things have been rather hectic lately. I've been working a new full-time job, planning my wedding and doing a lot of volunteer work as well.

James and I moved into a new house this January and we are settling in nicely. He has been working very hard both at work and at home. Renovating seems like an endless headache.

James' sister and neice are currently staying with us as they hunt for an apartment, so it's been a very full house the past couple of weeks. It's nice to have some company while James is at work.

As far as my "troubles" go, I have been doing very well lately and I am very proud of myself. James has been a huge help, of course and I have found a friend in his sister. James often finds us in the kitchen in the middle of the night chatting and eating ice cream straight from the carton.

I am truly happy and I hope the same for all of you.

They have become rather inseparable.

You can see in that last picture that I have gained a lot of weight back. Most people I see from my past don't even recognize me. The doctor says I am the healthiest he has ever seen me.

I believe this is a reflection of how elated I am, all the time.
Life truly is precious, every moment of it.

Love,
Alice

baby cabled hat 3
When Patrick saw that I was knitting hats for the baby, he told me he wanted me to make one like his for the baby. His was made from leftover yarn from JD's Irish Hiking Scarf and was initially for JD himself, but it turned out too small. Patrick commendeered it for himself and loves it for some reason. I was digging around in my yarn bags the other day and found a little ball of leftover yarn from the first hat. It didn't look like enough for me to make a hat, but I figured I'd make it work because it would make Patrick happy.

Here's the hat, the leftover yarn [a bit over twelve inches] and Patrick's hand for comparison. I just barely made it with the length.

And here's Patrick with his own hat and the baby's. He was really happy with I finished it - he told me it was 'beautiful.' Awwwwwwwwww!

Olivia
So today I called Sarah up to see how she and Liv are doing while they're in Georgia. While we were talking, Sarah put the phone on speaker so I could talk to Olivia. I started saying "Hiiii Oliviaaaa" and then I heard "Dadad!" That's pretty much the highlight of my day.
